8 Ways to Decorate Your Timber Windows at Christmas

Who doesn’t love Christmas decorations? A traditional Christmas tree in the living room, twinkling string lights outside, and stockings hung by the fireplace all lend themselves to a festive atmosphere. But there’s one area of the home that often gets forgotten: the windows. A cheerful window display draws attention from passersby and welcomes friends and family as they enter your home. Here are eight ideas for decorating your timber windows at Christmas.

Curtain lights add a magical glow to your timber windows. Icicle lights are also perfectly designed for window displays. Hang star- or snowflake-shaped lights for a particularly festive look. You can even simply outline the window frame with traditional string lights for a fast, easy decoration. Find what you’re looking for in white or multicolored lights.

Paper Snowflakes

Want to get the kids involved? Spend a snowy Sunday afternoon folding construction paper and cutting out snowflake patterns. You can even glue on glitter or sequins for added sparkle. Stick the finished product to the glass with double-sided tape or hang the snowflakes from yarn attached to the top of the window.

Evergreen Wreaths, Garlands & Bows

For a classic country Christmas feel, spruce up your timber windows with seasonal greenery. You might hang an evergreen wreath in the center of the window or drape a faux holly garland across the top. You can also display pine cones or branches you have collected on your nature walks. Whatever you choose, bright red bows are a fun way to complete the look.

Christmas Stencils

Buy stencils or make your own depicting traditional Christmas objects, such as snowflakes, reindeer, pine trees, and Santa’s sleigh. Place the stencil on the window and spray it with “snow frost” to create temporary, powdery white images on the glass.

Christmas Candles

Looking for an elegant, understated look? Set candles of various sizes and shapes on the windowsill. Their flickering glow after dark will create an inviting appearance both inside and outside your home. For fire safety and ease of use, consider using battery-operated LED candles with built-in timers.

Hanging Baubles

Hang ornaments, pinecones, mistletoe, miniature stockings, or other Christmas baubles in the window. Simply attach them to strings mounted to the window frame. For the most aesthetically pleasing presentation, space the baubles evenly apart and hang them from different lengths of string.

Window Clings

You can use these rubbery, sticky decorations year after year. Simply peel them off the plastic page they come on and stick them to the inside of your window. A reversible design means you can enjoy them from both sides of the glass.

Santa’s Village

If you have a wide sill or window seat, fill the space with a miniature Santa’s village. First, cover the windowsill with cotton “snow.” Then, place ceramic trees, people, and light-filled buildings around the snow. Complete the look with fairy lights hanging from the window frame to depict the starry night sky above.
